Stravinsky was a longtime enthusiast of the fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen, whose story The Nightingale was the inspiration for the composer's opera Le rossignol (1908-1914). In 1928, when actress-impresario Ida Rubinstein commissioned a ballet from Stravinsky, he combined his appreciation for Andersen's work with a long-harbored notion of using melodies from the music of his compatriot Tchaikovsky as the basis for a new composition. The result was Le baiser de la fée (1928) or, in its full translated title, "The Fairy's Kiss, Allegorical Ballet in Four Tableaux, Inspired by the Muse of Tchaikovsky." The ballet is based on Andersen's tale "The Ice Maiden." Stravinsky provides a compact synopsis of the story in his autobiography: "A fairy imprints her magic kiss on a child at birth and parts it from its mother. Twenty years later, when the youth has attained the very zenith of his good fortune, she repeats the fatal kiss and carries him off to live in supreme happiness with her ever afterward." The sonic language of this ballet might be described as a combination of Tchaikovsky's opulent melodies spiked with a bit of 1920s dissonance, a characteristically colorful orchestral palette, and a hint of the emotional coolness typical of Stravinsky's neo-Classical style. Stravinsky does employ some Tchaikovskian sounds and instrumental combinations, but the textures are consistently leaner than those in Tchaikovsky's own ballets. In 1934, Stravinsky condensed the nearly hour-long ballet into a Divertimento of some 25 minutes. Around the same time, he transcribed the Divertimento for violin and piano for his own use during concert tours with violinist Samuel Dushkin.

In celebration of the bicentenary of the birth of Hans Christian Andersen, a special edition of his much-loved stories has been compiled. This elegant volume, with a wealth of fully illustrated biographical information and reference material, is a stunning testament to the lasting legacy of his work. Hans Christian Andersen (1805-75) is one of the best-known storytellers of all time. He was an extraordinarily prolific and varied author whose magical stories include The Ugly Duckling, The Princess and the Pea, The Little Mermaid, The Tinderbox, The Snow Queen, The Ice Maiden, The Emperors New Clothes and many others which have become a part of folk-memory around the world. He is best known for these tales, but even these are by no means all fairy tales or ones for children. Some are straightforward fables, though he borrowed or adapted very little, most of his work being original. Together with selecting the stories, editor Charles Mosley has written a scholarly but immensely readable introduction. Detailing the prolific nature of Andersens writings, he highlights every part of his work, from fables and tales to opinion pieces and travel writings. Mosley also provides a biographical section giving details of Hans Christian Andersens life and travels, as well as sections on Andersen in art and illustration, in film, music and the stage, and even postage stamps. From his humble beginnings in a one-room house in Denmark to the end of his life, Andersens life is wonderfully chronicled.

The Emperor's New Clothes: a moral tale for development experts?

While global problems of poverty, inequality, and social upheaval are on the increase, the language used by development agencies and development experts sounds increasingly radical and idealistic. New socio-political conditions have been borrowed from real contexts in the South, only to be re-imposed on Southern 'partners'. Notions like empowerment, participation, and governance are paradoxically enforced through top-down, external intervention. Hans Christian Andersen's parable of the Emperor's new clothes highlights the illusory nature of this re-packaging of development policies in the 1990s. One major difficulty is that micro- and meso-level socio-political conditionalities remain subordinated to macro-level economic liberalisation. They look participatory from a distance, but at close quarters these measures have effectively become new forms of management and control, which are just as costly [as the old methods] but do not result in great benefits to project participants. The problem with this rosy image of a highly neurotic man, who was afraid to love and had only occasional contact with children, ist that it belies the profound and disturbing contribution that Andersen made to the fairy-tale tradition throughout the world. Indeed, Andersen's cultural contributions currently undergo the same trivializtion and Disneyfication as the author himself. Such treatment affects the seriousness with which a work is viewed in cultural industries. The critial edge of authors' writings - such as insights about social injustice and political turmoil - are too often omitted entirely.

The invisible robe. An alternative ending to a famous tale.

Janetta Goldstein: In Mary Howitt's papers in the archives of the London Borough of Hackney, there isa draft translation of "The Emperor's New Clothes" - which she called "The invisible Robe". When Andersen visited Mary Howitt in Clapton in July 1847 she made the translation, and added on the draft:
"Mr. Andersen gave me this. He told me the people in Copenhagen objected to it":
'But he has no robes on at all!' a little child cried out.
'That rude child wants to spoil the procession', said a bystander.
'He is trying to spoil the procession,' said all the people.
And so they beat the child with their walking sticks, and those who had no walking sticks threw mud at him.
But the Emperor thought within himself, 'I must go through with the procession,' and so he held himslef a little higher, and the chambrlains held on tighter than ever, and carried the train that was not there at all.

This piece of news appears to be a mistake, as the Hackney Archives on request informs "that among their holdings, they only have a portrait of Mary Howitt. The statement in the Times Literary Supplement seems, therefore, to be a mistake". 30 April 2014.

Lad eventyret begynde. Et helt nyt eventyrhus til 305 millioner kroner skal stå færdigt i 2020.

Arkitekt har eventyrlige ambitioner. De 305 millioner kroner til opførelsen af et nyt H.C. Andersens Hus i Odense er nu på plads med store donationer fra fonde og Odense Kommune [fra A.P. Møller Fonden og Augustinus Fonden]. Det er japaneren Kengo Kuma, der tegner det nye hus. Engelske Event Communications står for at finde på indholdet til det nye H.C. Andersens hus. Alt omkring museet kommer ifølge folkene bag til at fortælle historier.
Erik Thomsen: Det er prikken over iet. For alene illustrationerne fra arkitektfirmaet giver en lyst til at gå på opdagelse i en ny og langt større Lotzes Have.
HCA skal på ophold hos Carl Nielsen. Når byggeriet af det nye H.C. Andersens Hus begynder, skal der være midlertidig Andersen-udstilling i det nuværende Carl Nielsen Museum.
Lars Havelund: HCA-projektet kan tvinge paraden væk. Glæde ved penge fra Møller, Realdania og fra Odense Kommune, men pas nu på eventyrslottet ... jeg har fuld tillid til, at der kan findes en god og varig placering af HCA-paraden og dens eventyrslot i området - også i fremtiden.Fyens Stiftstidende, 1. og 2. november 2016. -

Ved månedens udgang lukker HCA-museet og Børnekulturhuset Fyrtøjet. Museet åbner 20. januar i en mindre udgave på ny adresse. Fyrtøjet skal til Japan og til Nyborgladen.
