Edward Charlton's journal about his travels in Norway and Denmark 1836.

Edward Charlton, of Newcastle upon Tyne, England, made a journey to Norway and Denmark in 1836 and wrote a journal about his travels. He had an introductory letter to a Professor Oersted in Copenhagen. [on September 7th] He was invited to dinner and among the guests was a 'Mr Andersen ...... quite a poetical looking genius, and extremely agreeable in his manners'. After dinner Andersen 'begged me to accept of one of his poems'. The following day [on 8th September] the poem was delivered to his hotel - 'Agnete og Havmanden', Agnes and the Merman, founded on the old Danish ballad of the same name. I have since read part of it and it is certainly in a very pleasing though rather extravagant style'. [Copy of typed manuscript, pp 14-15, 22-23, 27]. Newcastle upon Tyne, 1836

"I will become famous," returned I, and I then told her all that I had read about extraordinary men. "People have," said I, "at first an immense deal of adversity to go through, and then they will be famous."
It was a wholly unintelligible impulse that guided me. I wept, I prayed, and at last my mother consented, after having first sent for a so-called wise woman out of the hospital, that she might read my future fortune by the coffee-grounds and cards.

The two Baronesses

Romanen De to Baronesser udkom først på engelsk hos Richard Bentley i London, oversat af Charles Beckwith Lohmeyer, under titlen "The two Baronesses". Det var en betingelse fra udenlandske forlæggere, at den (og andre værker) ikke blev udgivet på dansk først, fordi det i så fald ville stå enhver frit for at oversætte og udgive den. - Anm.: The Spectator,The Literary Gazette,Oct. 1848, The Athenaeum 7.10.1848. The Weekly Dispatch, 8.10.1848. Douglas Jerrold's Weekly Newspaper, 14.10.1848; The Britannia, 14.10; W. Harrison Ainsworth, The New Monthly Magazine and Humorist Nov. 1848. The Sunday Times, 12.11.1848. The Times, 26.12.1848. The Morning Herald, no 20, 691, October 9, 1848.
This is the first work Mr. Andersen, the Danish poet, has put forth in an English dress; and, if written in English by his own unassisted efforts, it shows no mean proficiency in the language of this country. [...]
The scene of the romance itself is laid in the author's native country, and though its incidents may appear a little disjointed, and the thread of the narrative rather difficult to unravel, the careful reader will not fail to remark throughout those qualities which have recommended the previous works of M. Andersen to favourable notice. Great sensibility, nice delineation of characters, and an aptitude at description which his poetic feeling has engendered and perfected, are visible in every page.
