From the Hans Christian Andersen biography "The Life of Hans Christian Andersen. Day By Day", written by DPhil Johan de Mylius:

1874

3rd - 27th July

At Bregentved Estate, where HCA had only planned to stay 8 days.

27th July - 18th September

Staying at Rolighed. Here he reads Main Currents of European Literature by Georg Brandes. HCA takes exception to the contents;

"...he does not say anything detrimental himself, but by quoting he lays a seed of poison in the works of others"
(the diary, 1st August).

In America, children take up a collection in benefit of HCA, who they believe to be poor. He receives 200 rdl. which he on one hand feels is a poor result for such a collection, but on the other hand does not care to receive.

26 August 1874
