Dear dearest Friend,

My first greeting out in the world in the new year is to you, you are so dear to me, so alive in my thoughts. At Christmas you should have received my first greeting; a little book I had written should have been your Christmas present, for I know that you, like a child, love Christmas. It should have been my first greeting from here at home. I understand, howeveryfrom a letter I received from London yesterday, that the book did not com e out on the appointed day, and. my Christmas happiness has been upset: you have not seen how alive you were and are in my thoughts, and so I must send you in this letter a handshake and a greeting ; the book will comelater. Now sunshine in heart and house, greet your wife and all the dear children from

Your admiring and most faithful friend,

Hans Christian Andersen
