[Dedikation i "Mulatten"]

[fra heftet, 14 linier oversat:] Carl Hartmann, 3rd April 1853. As a remembrance that on the day of your confirmation you could grieve yourself to dispair, because your sister and brother-in-law remained in Odense, the home town of H.C. Andersen, and they did not come to congratulate you. So H. C. Andersen is sending you his Mulatto which is only half black: the white means his friendship for you, the black represents the missing family. H. C. Andersen.
